Me
My name is Natasha Sharma, I am a senior at Newton North High School, and for the last three months of my senior year, I will be pursuing an internship in the Bear Lab at MIT. I am a passionate, energetic student-athlete who loves to cook, travel and learn. My zeal to better understand the world around me and my place in it has led me to the sciences, especially chemistry and biology, so that I can observe minute details with precision and focus. In undertaking a research-oriented internship in a hub of education, I hope to learn about what it takes to get a research project up and running to explore if research is a field for me and how I can potentially start my own research. Next year I will be continuing my education at Barnard College of Columbia University.

The bear Lab
Headed by principal investigator Dr. Mark Bear, the Bear Lab at MIT seeks to understand how the deprivation and experiences make connections within the brain. This information will then be used to look into possible novel treatments for brain disease. I am working under Ming Fong, a postdoctoral associate in the lab. Her research focuses on pinpointing how to aid visual impairment. To do this, she implants electrodes into the brain to observe how the animals react neurologically to light (the stimuli).

The Capstone Program
The Capstone program gives students the unique opportunity to dive headfirst into a topic of their interest and spend an intensive few months dedicated on the topic of their choice through research or an internship. The internship program specifically encourages growth through the development of independence, teamwork to achieve a common goal, experiential learning, and the problem solving skills that students heading off into the world are in need of.
